Running scared? You bet she was.

In just one small moment, Jake had managed to turn her life upside down. When had that moment occurred? When he took her into his arms and told her he wasn’t going anywhere? When he kissed her in an attempt to squelch her protests? When he started humming that sentimental tune from An Affair to Remember?

No, Jake had been making her dizzy ever since they were kids.

She wasn’t running scared; she was terrified.

She had to get out of there before he came back. She couldn’t think logically with him around, especially after last night.

She ran upstairs to get dressed. Glancing at the clock on the nightstand, she felt panic squeezing in her chest. It was after seven. Knowing Jake, she figured he’d rush right back, with Cory still half-asleep.

After quickly showering and brushing her teeth, she ran a brush through her knotted hair. A rat’s nest, he’d called it. How romantic. She packed her toiletries into her carry-on, vowing never to take so much stuff with her again, no matter where she went. Back in her room, she put on the first outfit she saw hanging in the closet, a long marine-blue dress with a sailor collar. Why had she brought this atrocity to Middlewood? Why had she bought it in the first place? She’d never liked it, even though Edward said it went well with her skin tone. What did that mean? Her skin was the color of seawater? Men. It was as if they all belonged to the same secret league, the How to Tick Off Your Girlfriend or Wife without Even Trying Club.

There was no time to change. Reaching behind her to do up the zipper, her thoughts strayed from Edward to Jake and then to Cory. Cory would be disappointed that she had gone, and she felt a pang of regret. But she needed time to mull things over. Besides, now that she was planning to come back most weekends, she didn’t have to feel guilty about going back to New York a few days earlier than planned.

Edward would be pleased.

Edward. How could she face him, knowing what she had done? Don’t tell him, her inner voice directed. Forget about it and get on with your life.

It wasn’t her inner voice talking. It was Cassie.

No, Cass, I have to tell him the truth.

The truth? What was the truth? That she had wanted to sleep with Jake? That she had felt so soft and warm, she’d been convinced she was melting?

Soft and warm, just like you, he’d said the other day, referring to her makeup. The next lipstick I buy should be called My Weakness, she thought. Forget Blushing Petals. She emptied the contents of the nightstand into her carry-on. Next, she yanked the remaining outfits off their hangers in the closet and piled them into her suitcase. I can’t leave anything behind, she thought. It didn’t matter that she was coming back; it was as if she believed she could wipe away her offense by denying she had been here.
